There Was a Plan...
I saved and broke down all the boxes from the move. I even had the son-in-law go out and grab some appliance boxes. This was the first step in in creating my new no dig, in ground garden beds. I was intent on removing all the tape from the boxes when I noticed how swollen my left unaffected foot was. I'd been having issues with the broken bones on my AFO clad foot swelling, but not the other one.
Oh bother, it would mean a couple days on Lasix, my diuretic, to reduce the swelling. It basically meant my heart was misbehaving again. The last thing I needed was to go into congestive heart failure again. Mad rushes to the bathroom followed. Each night I massaged lotion into my legs, elevated them on pillows as I slept each night. During the day, I'm off my feet totally. So nothing is being done in the garden. By now, I expected to have had a truckload of ground tree mulch delivered and spread. GRRR! But no, I'm stuck dealing with my heart issues.
This is the thing about being a senior citizen, it sucks when medical issues get in the way. So, I might not get a late summer garden planted after all. But then again, it will be all set for spring. If I can just get back on my feet to do it. Meanwhile, a tropical storm Danny formed off the coast and dumped a torrent of rain on us. That's okay, because the cardboard needed to be wetted down before the layer of wood chips and compost go down. Might as well let Mother Nature do it. So the area's 40'x50' garden's cardboard is now soaked. So it'll be ready for wood chips and compost when I'm up on my feet again. I'll be able to plant onions, garlic, and greens for a fall garden. It looks like I'm going to have to look for sales on frozen vegetables to can for winter stores. Sigh! So much for being empowered/ enabled/ self sufficient this week. I did stop by the Asian grocery store for my kimchi making supplies. Wohoo! I'll start the fermenting process later in the week. But they also had some already made up so I won't be missing my probiotic/ immuno-boosting fix. I find that 1/2 a cup a day works wonders! Their version (the market's) is milder and just the basic Napa cabbage, but tastes delicious. Ten days and counting until mine is ready... I can't wait. I only bought 20 lbs of Napa cabbage. 😁 I may try and grow Daikon radishes, green onions, carrots, and Napa in the fall too. Because the 1/2 cup a day works but my body wants a full, heaping cup. I've already planted ginger, turmeric, and horseradish in pots.
